Many couples want to read the Bible and pray together, but don’t know where to start. A devotional can help. It gives you a short Bible passage, a reading and often a prayer, so you don’t have to plan anything. You just open it and begin.

Choose the right one

Look for a devotional that:

  • is written for couples, or easy to share
  • is short enough to fit into a busy day
  • includes questions to talk about together
  • is rooted in the Bible, not just inspiration

Pastor Victor’s Covenant Restoration is a 21-day devotional written for married couples. Each day has a Bible passage, a short reading, questions to talk about together, a prayer and one practical thing to do. It’s especially for couples who are rebuilding after a hard season.

Pick a time

Choose a time that works for both of you:

  • Morning. Ten minutes over breakfast before the day starts.
  • Evening. After the children are in bed, before screens come out.
  • Weekly. If daily feels too much, try once a week as part of your weekly check-in.

Consistency matters more than length.

How to read it together

  1. Read the Bible passage aloud. Take turns.
  2. Read the reflection. One of you can read, or you can each read it quietly.
  3. Talk about the questions. Listen more than you speak. There are no wrong answers.
  4. Pray. Use the written prayer, or pray in your own words. See praying together as a couple.
  5. Do the practical step. If there’s an action, agree when you’ll do it.

If one of you is keener than the other

That’s common. Keep it short and pressure-free. Let the less keen spouse choose the time. Don’t use the devotional to make a point in an argument. The aim is to grow closer to God and to each other.

If you miss a day

Just carry on. A devotional is a help, not a test.

If it brings up something painful

Reading Scripture together can stir up old hurts. That isn’t a bad sign. It may be a sign that something needs attention. Pause, be kind, and talk about it when you’re both ready. If you’d like help, Pastor Victor’s marriage restoration programme can walk alongside you.
